Sweden hosts a consultative meeting of Syrian democratic forces and personages

At the invitation of the Preparatory Committee for the Conference of “Democratic Forces and Personages” and in cooperation with the “Olof Palme International Foundation”, a consultative meeting was held today, on Monday, December 13th in the Swedish capital, Stockholm, under the title “The Consultative Meeting of Democratic Forces and Personages… Necessity, Possibility and Hope” which brought together representatives of Syrian political parties and personages to discuss methods for framing the democratic opposition and establishing national consensus to find a political solution in Syria.

The consultative meeting was attended by the official of the Syrian file in the Swedish Foreign Ministry, Pier Uranus, in addition to the official of the Foreign Relations Committee in the Swedish Parliament, Kenneth G Forslund.

The meeting began with a welcoming speech by the Preparatory Committee for the Conference “Democratic Forces and Personages”, followed by a speech by the President of the Olof Palme International Center (a Swedish institution working for democracy, human rights and peace), Anna Sundstrom, where she stressed the importance of holding such meetings in order to achieve peace and stability in Syria.

The meeting will continue two days in which three sessions were held in the first day. The first one was entitled “A Political Reading of the Syrian Situation.” The participants stressed the importance of the Syrians’ consensus and owning their own decision to move towards a comprehensive solution for the Syrian crisis by Syrians.

While the second session was titled “Reading in the Case of the Syrian Opposition” in which participants discussed the consequences of the reality of the Syrian opposition and the reasons for its failure to present a model and an integrated national project with the participation of all Syrians so far.

While the third session dealt with “the possibilities and opportunities for the Syrian opposition”, in which it means the opportunities for the Syrian opposition parties to meet and to establish a comprehensive unit for the Syrian forces to end monopoly and be open to accommodate all Syrians.
During the discussions of this session, the head of the Executive Body of the Syrian Democratic Council, Ilham Ahmed, indicated that “Syrians wait for a glimmer of hope at the same time that the authority in Damascus has lost its protection while all conditions are prepared in Syria and in all regions to move towards a democratic project.”

For his part, Jihad Omar, the co-chair of the Local Administrations and Environment Body in the Autonomous Administration of North and East of Syria, called all Syrians to benefit from potentials that are existed in northern and eastern Syria politically and economically.

The Preparatory Committee for the conference of “Democratic Forces and Personages” emerged after six workshops in the capitals and cities of Europe in which the workshops were organized by the Syrian Democratic Council, and were preceded by three dialogue forums inside Syria during the years (2018-2019-2020), during which a great group of Syrian forces met with their various affiliations, to conclude with initial consensus to establish inclusive national consensus and find comprehensive formulas for the Syrian national opposition and enabling it to take the initiative towards resolving the crisis and achieving the aspirations of the Syrian people.
