As part of the sessions of the “Political Salon,” the Syrian Democratic Council held a workshop today, on Monday, addressing the UN Resolution 2254, at the SDC Center in the city of Raqqa. The workshop was attended by representatives of political parties operating in Raqqa, who discussed the sixteen clauses of the resolution and the reasons for the international interest by focusing on it.
During the workshop, the administrator of the Women’s Bureau of the Syrian Democratic Council, Thubiyah Al-Nasser, elaborated on those clauses and their importance as a starting point for a resolution. “This resolution is a lifeline for Syrians to overcome their crisis” she said.
Regarding her discussion about the resolution, its reasons for issuance, and its dimensions, Al-Nasser pointed out the essential factors that contributed to the escalation of the Syrian crisis, including the fragmentation of the opposition, the intransigence of the authorities, and regional interventions at the expense of the Syrian people.
Al-Nasser also touched upon the efforts of the Syrian Democratic Council to unify the opposition and its efforts to establish an entity representing democratic powers, aiming to achieve a peaceful resolution in Syria.
Regarding the obstacles to the implementation of the UN resolution, Ismael Al-Muhammed, the official of the Syrian Construction and Development Party in Raqqa, stated that the obstacle lies with the authorities in Damascus. On one hand, they do not want this resolution to achieve, and on the other hand, they lack the will to support it in favor of their allies.
On the other hand, Othman Al-Ali, the official of the Kurdish Democratic Unity Party in Syria, believed that Resolution 2254 is the most suitable resolution for the Syrian crisis. Therefore, countries that have interests in Syria diverted attention from the resolution and attempted to adopt alternative processes like “Astana, Sochi, and the Quartet meetings”.
On another note, Subhi Al-Mohammed, a member of the Relations Bureau of the Democratic Union Party, emphasized the importance of Security Council resolutions, especially concerning displaced Syrians. He highlighted the need for a political process, the formation of a transitional government, the drafting of a new constitution for the country, the cessation of hostilities, and the implementation of confidence-building measures.
At the end of the workshop, the participants unanimously agreed on the importance of Security Council Resolution 2254 for Syrians and stressed the need for its complete implementation. They called on political parties to conduct awareness campaigns to educate the public people about the resolution and to urge the international community to commit to its implementation.
