The first theme of the workshop on empowering Syrian women concludes its activities

The first day of the workshop organized by the Women’s Association of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC), concluded its activities on Monday in Raqqa city. This workshop is part of the national strategy for the empowerment and leadership of Syrian women for the years 2024-2025. The strategy was under the slogan “Syrian Women Advocate Security and Guarantee for a New Syria”.

The workshop witnessed a wide participation by female leaders and administrators representing the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES). Also, representatives of women’s organizations such as the Star Conference and the Zenobiya Women’s Gathering, in addition to representatives of political parties, unions, civil society organizations, and independent figures participated in the workshop.

Layla Qaraman, Co-chairwoman of the SDC, delivered an opening speech for workshop. She emphasized that this initiative aims to strengthen the role of women in decision-making and effective participation in political, administrative, and economic fields. She stressed the importance of ensuring the rights of Syrian women constitutionally and legally, pointing out their struggle and resistance despite attempts at exclusion and marginalization.

The first day of the workshop focused on the concept of empowerment in all terms, especially political empowerment. Sherin Ali, a social activist, and Salam Ibrahim, a civil engineer and field activist, moderated the workshop. The discussions addressed the difficulties and challenges facing women, with a focus on the need to strengthen their political, social, and economic capacities and encourage their integration into the political process.

Women participating in the workshop praised the achievements made by women working in various fields in regions-held the AANES. They emphasized that these accomplishments have enhanced women’s role in society and qualified them to lead the negotiation process. Also, they discussed the situation of women in other areas such as Idlib, where they face multiple restrictions and pressures due to the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly known as al-Nusra Front.

The participants in the workshop presented several proposals for empowering women politically and encouraging them to participate in dialogues and women’s activities. At the conclusion of the activities on the first day of the workshop, Qaraman stressed the importance of supporting women and considered this workshop an important step towards empowering women and enhancing their role in building Syria’s future.

The workshop is scheduled to continue its activities tomorrow. The second theme of the workshop will be discussed under the title “Syrian Women Face Challenges During Syrian Revolution”. Additionally, it will be concluded with a set of proposals and recommendations on empowering Syrian women.
