These protests reflect legitimate demands and genuine concerns expressed by our people regarding the future of the country and the trajectory of political transition in Syria.

Peaceful protest and the freedom of expression are fundamental rights for every Syrian citizen. They also constitute a core pillar of any serious democratic project. From this standpoint, the SDC stresses that peaceful public expression is a core democratic value that must be respected and safeguarded. Legitimate demands call for serious listening and responsible political engagement, not security-driven responses or forceful confrontation.

The SDC expresses its deep sorrow over the loss of Syrian lives and the injury of others during these protests. It extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a swift and full recovery to all those injured. The loss of any Syrian citizen’s life is a grave national tragedy and a serious warning that must be addressed with the utmost responsibility. Accordingly, the SDC holds the Syrian Interim Government directly responsible for safeguarding civilian lives, ensuring their safety, and fully protecting the right to peaceful expression without any form of violence or repression.

Furthermore, the SDC warns against relying on security-based approaches to address core political and social issues. Such approaches do not resolve crises; instead, they deepen them and fuel widespread public discontent. They also risk pushing the country back into cycles of violence—cycles for which Syrians have already endured immense human and social losses. At this critical moment, Syria needs reasoned dialogue and political wisdom, not escalatory decisions that could return the country to square one.

The greatest threat to Syria’s future is not diversity of opinions. Rather, it is the attempt to exploit differences to inflame sectarian or regional divisions, or to spread hate speech among the components of Syrian society. Syria’s unity, along with its ethnic, religious, and cultural diversity, forms the solid foundation of any inclusive national project.

On this basis, the SDC calls on all political, social, and civil actors to embrace an inclusive national dialogue as the only viable path to addressing the current crises. Moreover, it urges the pursuit of consensual political solutions that safeguard the rights of all Syrians, without exclusion or discrimination. This stage requires a high level of national responsibility, the preservation of civil peace, and collective efforts to build a pluralistic democratic state—one that respects the will of its people and upholds their dignity.

Syrian Democratic Council
December 28, 2025

The Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) is closely and responsibly following the popular movements and peaceful protests that have taken place in recent hours across cities and regions in the coastal regions and central Syria.
