Through the steadfast resistance of its people and the sacrifices of the defending forces, Kobani marked a major turning point. It signaled the beginning of the end of the terrorist organization ISIS—not only in Syria, but worldwide.

Kobani stood firm against one of the most brutal terrorist groups, offering thousands of martyrs in defense of all humanity. Today, it is subjected to continuous attacks and a suffocating siege by the forces of the Damascus authority. This siege includes the deliberate cutting of water, electricity, and medical supplies, evoking policies of collective punishment and retaliation. Under international law, such practices constitute a full-fledged war crime and a blatant violation of the principles of international humanitarian law.

What Kobani is facing today cannot be separated from its historical symbolism. The siege and ongoing attacks appear to constitute an act of retaliation against a city that broke ISIS’s power and shattered the illusion of terrorism that once threatened the world. The continuation of this situation poses a serious risk of mass atrocities against innocent civilians and undermines prospects for stability and peace in Syria as a whole.

Accordingly, the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) affirms the following:
1- An immediate ceasefire in and around Kobani and across all areas of heightened tension, along with the complete and unconditional lifting of the siege on the city.
2- The opening of safe and humanitarian corridors to ensure the unhindered delivery of water, electricity, medicine, and other essential supplies to the civilian population.
3- The withdrawal of all military forces that threaten the security and stability of Kobani from the city’s surroundings, in order to protect civilians and prevent further military escalation.
4- An immediate halt to armed attacks in the regions of northeast Syria, along with the criminalization of inflammatory media rhetoric that threatens social unity and civil peace.
5- Upholding the values and ethics of Kurdish–Arab relations, making them the cornerstone for safeguarding the region’s security and stability, and a key entry point to resolving the national crisis.
6- A genuine return to political dialogue as the sole viable path for resolving disputes, rejecting the logic of force and violence.

In this context, the SDC addresses a clear appeal to:
• International actors and the Global Coalition: The moral and political responsibility you assumed during the battle to defeat ISIS today requires an active role in protecting Kobani from attacks and siege. It also entails preventing any setback that could jeopardize the achievements made in combating terrorism.
• Syrian Democratic Entities: Protecting Kobani is a defense of the pluralistic Syrian Democratic project, and of a future based on partnership, justice, and the rejection of exclusion and violence.
• Syrian Interim Government: We call on you to assume your national and legal responsibilities. Halt all forms of escalation and commit to meaningful engagement in an inclusive national dialogue. Such dialogue should lead to political solutions that preserve Syria’s unity and uphold the dignity of its people.

To our people in Kobani and across Northeast Syria, we reaffirm that the steadfastness which defeated ISIS remains capable of thwarting all attempts at siege and aggression. The will to resist and to live is stronger than all forms of repression. Kobani will continue to stand as a symbol of freedom and dignity.

Just as Kobani marked the start of the end of ISIS, protecting the city today can be the true foundation for achieving stability and peace in Syria. This can only be achieved if all parties fully assume their historical responsibilities.

Glory to the martyrs.
Freedom for Kobani.
A just peace for all Syrian regions.

Syrian Democratic Council
January 26, 2026

On the Anniversary of the Liberation of Kobani: Protecting Kobani today is a moral and political responsibility of the international community.
