This event represented a turning point in national awareness. It also formed a significant milestone in the struggle of the Kurdish people for dignity and equal rights within a country that includes all its citizens.

On this day, a tragic incident in a football stadium turned into a spark that exposed the deep frustration that had built up over many years. This frustration resulted from policies of discrimination and exclusion that affected the Kurdish population in Syria for decades. At the time, authorities under the Assad regime responded to the peaceful protests with excessive force. Several people were killed, many others were injured, and thousands were arrested. These events left a lasting impact on the collective memory of Syrian Kurds and on public awareness across Syria.

Remembering this uprising confirms that the Kurdish issue in Syria is not a limited or separate issue. It is an integral part of the broader national issue and is directly linked to building a state based on citizenship, justice, and the rule of law. The events of that period demonstrated that addressing historical grievances is necessary for lasting stability. Among these grievances is the discrimination that Kurds experienced for many years. Without addressing such issues, a genuine democratic transition in Syria cannot succeed.

Syrians in general, and Kurds in particular, have been subjected to systematic human rights violations as a result of repression. The impact of that period continues to affect many families who lost relatives or suffered from arrest and persecution. For this reason, achieving justice for the victims and holding those responsible for violations accountable remains an essential part of building Syria’s future. It is also a necessary element of any serious political process based on justice and the rule of law.

At a time when Syria continues to undergo profound changes, the need for a comprehensive national approach has become even more urgent. Such an approach must address the root causes of the Syrian crisis in its political, social, and national dimensions. A real solution can only be achieved through inclusive national dialogue that must recognize the ethnic, cultural, and religious diversity of the country. It should also help establish a democratic and decentralized political regime that ensures fair participation for all Syrians in managing their country’s affairs.

This anniversary also highlights the importance of strengthening Kurdish unity in Syria. It underscores the need to reinforce the role of Kurdish political forces and public figures in joint national efforts. Such efforts can help defend the legitimate rights of the Kurdish people. At the same time, they can strengthen national partnership with the rest of Syria’s communities in order to build a future based on coexistence and mutual respect.

On this occasion, the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) affirms that the path toward a stable and just Syria requires recognition of the diversity of the Syrian people. It also requires commitment to political dialogue as the primary means of resolving disagreements. Through cooperation and shared responsibility, Syrians can work together to build a democratic and pluralistic state that guarantees rights and freedoms for all citizens without discrimination.

On this anniversary, we pay tribute to the memory of the victims of the March 12, 2004 uprising. We also honor all those who suffered under repression and authoritarian rule in Syria. Their memory will remain present in the conscience of Syrians and will continue to inspire efforts toward building a country based on justice, freedom, and dignity.

Syrian Democratic Council
March 12, 2026

The twenty-second anniversary of the March 12, 2004 uprising in the city of Qamishli marks an important moment in the history of social and political activism in Syria.
