This celebration marks a time of renewal and hope. As nature begins a new cycle, we renew our commitment to a Syria that is free, united, and fair for all its people.

Nowruz is a meaningful cultural occasion that reflects ideas of renewal, strength, and standing against injustice. It shows the enduring human aspiration for dignity and the determination to overcome oppression. In Kurdish heritage, Nowruz is associated with the story of Kawa the Blacksmith, who rose against tyranny and ignited the flame of freedom. This story is not limited to the Kurdish people alone. It resonates with all peoples who have experienced oppression and who believe in the inevitability of freedom and justice.

Syria is rich in a unique cultural heritage that has developed over centuries through coexistence among different peoples, ethnic groups, and cultures. Kurds, Arabs, Syriac Assyrians, Armenians, and all other components of this country have never been a temporary diversity or something that needs justification. They form one social fabric, whose interconnected elements shape the true and inclusive identity of Syria. Nowruz, as a celebration observed by millions across this land, is a natural expression of this diversity and an integral part of Syria’s cultural landscape.

At the same time, marking this occasion requires honesty and clarity. For decades, the Kurdish people in Syria have faced policies that denied their identity and limited their civil rights. These policies included displacement, restrictions on language and culture, and pressure to abandon their identity. They appeared in different forms over time, such as denial of citizenship, forced assimilation measures, and security restrictions on those calling for their rights. Acknowledging this reality is not about focusing on past injustices, but about recognizing an essential truth. It is a necessary step for any serious effort to build justice and genuine reconciliation in Syria.

Despite these challenges, history shows that the Kurdish people have preserved their identity and have continued to celebrate Nowruz. When public celebration was restricted, it continued in private. Cultural traditions such as songs, poetry, and dance were kept alive within families and communities. This perseverance reflects a strong commitment to identity and shows that identity is not something granted by authorities, but a fundamental right that cannot be erased.

The SDC affirms that it considers Nowruz a shared national occasion. It also reiterates that its political vision is based on a democratic, pluralistic, and decentralized Syria. In this vision, the rights of all national and cultural components are protected, and different identities are respected within a unified national framework.
In this context, Nowruz is not only a Kurdish occasion. It represents a vision for a future Syria that includes all its people, recognizes all its components, and is built on equality in rights and dignity.

On this occasion, we renew the call for genuine national solidarity that looks toward the future. We wish Syria well, and we wish the Kurdish people and all Syrians dignity and prosperity.

Happy Nowruz

Syrian Democratic Council
March 21, 2026

The Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) extends its warmest congratulations and sincere best wishes to the Kurdish people in Syria, and to all Syrians, on the occasion of Nowruz.
