On the eleventh anniversary of the Kobani Massacre, we solemnly remember the innocent victims who lost their lives. Their killing was part of one of the most horrific crimes committed by the terrorist organization ISIS against civilians in Syria.<\/strong>
\nIn the early hours of June 25, 2015, after failing to capture Kobani through military force, ISIS militants infiltrated the city and deliberately targeted civilians in their homes and on the streets. The attack resulted in a horrific massacre that claimed the lives of hundreds of women, children, and elderly people.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This anniversary is not only an occasion to remember a profound human tragedy. It is also a national and moral responsibility to reaffirm our commitment to truth and justice. It serves as a reminder of the immense sacrifices made by the people of Kobani, alongside all communities across North and East Syria, in confronting one of the most dangerous terrorist organizations of the modern era. It is also an opportunity to preserve the collective memory of a people who refused to surrender and remained committed to their right to life, freedom, and dignity despite violence and terrorism.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kobani has become a global symbol of resistance and resilience against terrorism. The city’s struggle was not only a defense of its territory or its local community. It was also a defense of shared human values against an extremist project that sought to eliminate diversity, destroy peaceful coexistence, and impose violence and hatred on society. Despite the destruction caused by the war, Kobani demonstrated that the will of the people is stronger than terrorism and that the commitment to freedom can defeat even the most extreme and brutal forms of violent extremism.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The resistance of Kobani marked a historic turning point in the fight against ISIS, not only in Syria but across the region and beyond. From Kobani, a new phase in the fight against terrorism began. It demonstrated that an organization which at the time appeared to be rapidly expanding and capable of imposing its rule by force could, in fact, be defeated when people united in defense of freedom and fundamental human rights. The resistance in Kobani also paved the way for a series of victories that ultimately led to the dismantling of the so-called “Islamic State” caliphate and the end of its territorial control.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Today, eleven years after the Kobani Massacre, the legacy of Kobani remains as relevant and important as ever. Terrorism has not been completely eradicated. Terrorist networks and sleeper cells continue to exploit political, economic, and social crises in an effort to reorganize and re-emerge in different forms. At the same time, hate speech, intolerance, and violent extremism continue to pose serious threats to societies. They undermine stability and endanger prospects for lasting peace and social cohesion in Syria and across the region.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This anniversary comes at a time when Syria continues to face complex political, security, and social challenges. The country is still suffering from the consequences of war, division, and a prolonged economic crisis. Meanwhile, its diverse communities aspire to build a state that guarantees rights and freedoms and protects the dignity of all citizens without discrimination or exclusion.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Remembering the Kobani Massacre should therefore serve as a call to strengthen national efforts to address the root causes of extremism. It should also reinforce a culture of dialogue, tolerance, and equal citizenship as the most effective safeguard against the recurrence of the tragedies that Syria has experienced over the past years.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On this occasion, the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) reaffirms that combating terrorism cannot be limited to military and security measures alone. It also requires building a political, social, and cultural framework that is capable of protecting society from extremist ideology and eliminating the conditions that allow it to spread. Ensuring justice for the victims and holding those responsible for terrorist crimes accountable are also essential components of any credible path toward lasting peace and stability.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We also honor the sacrifices made by all Syrian communities that stood together in the fight against ISIS. Their unity demonstrated that diversity and pluralism have been, and will continue to be, a source of strength for Syria’s future.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The vision for which we continue to strive today is grounded in the legacy of Kobani. It is based on the firm belief that Syria can restore security and stability only through a comprehensive, democratic political solution that ensures the participation of all Syrians in governing their country. Such a solution must lay the foundation for a decentralized democratic state that respects ethnic, cultural, and religious diversity. It must guarantee the rights of women and youth and protect fundamental freedoms and human rights. It should also create the conditions necessary to achieve sustainable development, social justice, and lasting civil peace.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Glory to the memory of the martyrs of the Kobani Massacre.<\/strong>
\nRespect and compassion for the innocent victims.<\/strong>
\nFull recovery for the wounded.<\/strong>
\nTribute to all those who resisted terrorism and defended our shared humanity.<\/strong><\/p>\n
