SDC’s Co-chairwoman participates in lighting Newroz torch

On the occasion of Newroz, the Kurdish New Year, the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) lit the Newroz torch in front of its headquarters in the city of Qamishli (Qamishlo) in northeastern Syria. The event was attended by members of political parties, community representatives, and civil institutions.

The celebration commenced with a speech by Layla Qaraman, Co-chairwoman of the SDC, who extended congratulations to the entire Syrian people, specifically highlighting the Kurds in Syria and around the world on the occasion of Newroz. She expressed wishes for freedom and stability for the region’s populations.

“Newroz is a celebration of peace, freedom, and dignity. It marks a bright season for all the peoples of the region. This day holds great significance because it represents the historical path toward freedom and the achievements made through the sacrifices of martyrs and the resilience of the Kurdish people,” Qaraman stated. She also expressed hopes for stability in Syria and the return of all displaced individuals to their homeland after its liberation.

Various Syrian components have urged the need to unite and consolidate efforts to confront the attacks facing the region. They emphasized the liberation of all occupied Syrian territories, including Afrin, Ras al-Ain (Sere Kaniye), Tel Abyad, Jarablus and Azaz.

Qaraman underscored that the SDC, over the past eight years, has been striving for building a new Syria that embraces all its components. It tirelessly works towards resolving the Syrian crisis and the Kurdish issue, which is a national matter concerning all Syrians.

The event was marked by lighting the Newroz torch for 2024, with the participation of all attendees. During the event, there were folk dances accompanied by Newroz songs.

Although Newroz is the Kurdish New Year, its symbolism coinciding with the Spring season reflects the principle of fraternity. Newroz celebrations express the peaceful coexistence among the various components of the Syrian people.
