The Turkish aggression has continued its airstrikes since Sunday, December 24, using warplanes and drones that have targeted several vital sites in northeastern Syria. The objective is to destroy the infrastructure and economy serving civilians. The Turkish military has undertaken airstrikes against the foundations of civilians’ life in this region for the third time in a year. Approximately five million Syrian citizens live in this region. Turkish aircraft have bombarded various institutions over two days, including power generation stations, oil production plants, hospitals, agricultural development companies, and construction development companies. Additionally, a printing press that disseminated ideas and culture in the region was destroyed, resulting in the martyrdom of its director and several employees, along with other casualties among civilians working in these institutions.
The Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) strongly condemns the Turkish military’s aggression, which poses a threat to security and stability, terrorizes peaceful citizens, and undermines their livelihoods under the pretext of protecting Turkey’s national security. The Council also condemns Turkey’s hostile policies toward northeastern Syria, including its ongoing pursuit of displacement and demographic change projects in occupied areas such as Afrin, Ras al-Ain, and Tel Abyad.
The SDC calls on the international community, represented by the United Nations and its competent bodies, to condemn this aggression, hold Turkey accountable, and put an end to its interventions that violate international laws. The Council urges maximum pressure on Turkey to ensure the respect of Syria’s sovereignty and adherence to the principles of good neighborliness. Additionally, the Council calls on the United States and the Russian Federation to play their roles in protecting and enforcing the rules of international and humanitarian laws, refusing to tolerate Turkish ambitions and extortion policies, especially in this crucial stage in the region.
Furthermore, the SDC, as announced in its fourth conference, emphasizes the importance of a political resolution in Syria. It believes that the unity of Syrians is the only solution for them to overcome their crisis and achieve a democratic transition towards a new constitution for a pluralistic decentralized Syria. The Council warns against the state of division, which has become the main reason for the continued regional interventions negatively impacting the Syrian people and their future. The Council calls on all Syrian powers to unite against these brutal attacks, considered as war crimes and crimes against humanity.
