Syrian women in Aleppo called on the Syrian government and actors involved in the Syrian issue to fulfill their legal obligations towards the Turkish state as an aggressor state, in accordance with the UN Charter and international laws. That came in conjunction with the sixth anniversary of the Turkish aggression on the Syria’s Afrin city.
The demand was made during a dialogue seminar organized by the Women’s Bureau affiliated with the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC), held on Saturday in Aleppo, with the participation of representatives from political parties, activists, and women’s gatherings. Independent Syrian women also attended the seminar under the slogan “By the will of Syrian Women, We Will End the Occupation”.
Zainab Qanbr, an administrator in the Women’s Bureau of the SDC in Aleppo, welcomed the attendees and spoke about the reality of the areas occupied by the Turkish state. She emphasized that Turkey, through its practices over the years, has imposed a new reality in the region.
“The settlement implies significant risks and warns of a major catastrophe represented by the restructuring of the region through the demographic change that the occupying state is striving hard to achieve,” commenting on the settlements being built in northern Syrian regions, Miyada Arabo, a member of the General Council of the Democratic Union Party, stated.
Kifah Muhammad, a teacher, noted the need to mobilize public opinion to support the Syrian people, especially in the northern areas occupied by Turkey, and to support human rights work, monitoring and documentation. Violations against the Syrian people should be exposed, leading to international justice as formulated by international human rights charters and laws.
In turn, Hanan Kurdoush, the spokesperson for the Women’s Council in the Future Syria Party, called on international powers to pressure Turkey to withdraw from the occupied areas. She also called for holding accountable all those involved in crimes and violations against Syrian citizens, securing a safe return for displaced people to their homes, and reconstruction affected areas.
In the same context, Khalida Suleiman, a member of the Central Committee of the Kurdish Democratic Progressive Party in Syria, affirmed that the solution lies in ending the occupation of all Syrian territories through a democratic political dialogue as the main path to solve the Syrian crisis in accordance with UN Resolution 2254 and relevant UN resolutions. She also called for holding a comprehensive Syrian national conference.
The participants in the seminar urged the UN to take all necessary measures to protect the population in Afrin and entire Syria and to pressure Turkey as it is an occupying force to bear its legal responsibilities to ensure public order and safety.
