Statement for Public Opinion on International Women’s Day

People around the world celebrate the International Women’s Day on March 8 every year. It coincides with the coming of Spring, symbolizing the strong relationship between women and the nature. Women represent the renewal, change, and new beginnings.

Despite a chaos prevails in the entire world, we commemorate the International Women’s Day this year amidst challenging circumstances. Recently, there have been a lot of developments, intense wars, conflicts, and crises, prompting the need for setting up new roadmaps and strategies.

Under these unstable conditions, women have experienced violence, violations, exclusion, displacement, and discrimination. Simultaneously, women have played vital and pioneering roles in confronting crises, preserving the social fabric, maintaining civil peace, and safeguarding their communities. Their ongoing struggle continues to achieve significant gains across all domains.

As women have been a source of inspiration and creativity since the dawn of time, we all believe in their abilities to face crises and risks. They can find solutions, set up strategies and be an actor to achieve a democratic national transition and social justice.

To realize this, we, as the Women’s Association of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC), call upon all women to unite their efforts, stand together, and work towards the genuine implementation of all international and humanitarian Resolutions and laws related to women. These measures ensure the protection of their rights and hold the international community accountable for its responsibilities towards women.

We, as Syrian women, have suffered from all forms of violations over the past thirteen years. Those violations were contrary to international conventions and norms. Syria will not be a safe zone and overcome its crisis unless women’s issues are resolved justly and comprehensively.

We firmly believe in the capabilities of Syrian women in facing the Syrian crisis, reuniting Syrians, and safeguarding Syria’s unity and sovereignty, both its land and people.

On this momentous occasion, which owes its significance to the tremendous sacrifices made by women throughout history and up to the present day, we extend our warmest congratulations and wishes to all women, especially Syrian women. Simultaneously, we renew our commitment to preserving the gains achieved by women in their ongoing struggle and continuing the path of liberation.
