SDC’s General Council discusses political and regional developments

The General Council of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) held on Thursday its regular meeting in Hasakah city. Representatives from political parties, civil activities, and youth and women’s organizations affiliated with the SDC participated in the meeting. Layla Qaraman and Mahmoud al-Mislat, Co-chairs of the SDC, along with deputies of the SDC’s Co-chairs chaired the meeting.

The participants in the meeting observed a moment of silence to remember the martyrs of freedom in Syria. Qaraman, during her opening speech, commemorated the July 19 Revolution. She recalled the sacrifices of the martyrs that resulted in the current achievements. She also affirmed that the SDC represents the true Syrian opposition. Additionally, she emphasized the priority of activating the intra-Syrian dialogue as a starting point to resolving the crisis.

Al-Mislat underscored that the SDC is open to engage in the national dialogue with all Syrians. “We believe in peace and national dialogue to resolve all issues. We also are ready to engage in dialogue even with Turkey to address the Syrian people’s cause and fulfill their aspirations,” al-Mislat stated. Regarding the situation of Syrian refugees in Turkey, he added by stating “We will welcome Syrian refugees who are from northeastern Syria and not involved in killing crimes”.

The SDC’s Co-chairs provided a comprehensive political briefing on international and regional developments. Al-Mislat also reviewed the outcomes of his recent visits to several European and Arab countries. He described those visits as constructive and positive meetings.

The meeting discussed the importance of strengthening the Syrian internal front. The participants warned of the repercussions of normalization between Turkey and the authorities in Damascus on the Syrian cause. They also underscored the necessity of supporting the intra-Kurdish dialogue and engaging in national dialogues with various segments of the Syrian people.

The meeting also addressed the significant challenges the Syrian refugees in Turkey face. The participants stressed the need to provide them with necessary protection and ensure their human rights. In a related context, the SDC underscored the importance of activating the Arab role in finding a comprehensive solution to the Syrian crisis. It emphasized the need to adhere to relevant international resolutions as the basis for upcoming political initiatives.

The meeting also discussed the escalating popular movement across various parts of Syria. The SDC expressed its deep solidarity with the protesters in Idlib and northwestern Syria, affirming the legitimacy of their demands for freedom and dignity. Similarly, the SDC fully supported the popular movement in Suwayda. It called for the response to the political demands of the Syrian people and the achievement of democratic transition.

On the organizational level, the meeting discussed the SDC’s internal affairs. It reviewed mechanisms and ways to develop work plans, focusing on improving performance efficiency. Moreover, it enhanced the SDC’s crucial role in the Syrian and regional political scene. Additionally, it discussed the SDC’s programs for the upcoming phase.

The meeting concluded by emphasizing the necessity of intensifying efforts to achieve the Syrian people’s aspirations for freedom, justice, and dignity. It strived towards finding an inclusive political solution to the Syrian crisis to ensure the unity of Syria, both land and people.
