Deir ez-Zor’s Inhabitants Strive to Build a Brighter Future for Syria

Deir ez-Zor Governorate represents a crucial region regarding the multifaceted Syrian scene due to its strategic location and natural resources.
This region, located along the banks of the Euphrates River, has been inhabited by various social groups within Syrian society for thousands of years, showcasing a rich history. After enduring the hardships of war and siege, the residents of Deir ez-Zor now look forward with hope and determination to a future that ensures security, stability, and dignity.

Amid the ongoing conflict in Syria, Deir ez-Zor has become a focal point for regional and international interests. It represents a strategic goal for the conflicting parties due to its oil fields, fertile agricultural lands, and its vital location on the Iraqi border. Therefore, it became a target for repeated attempts to destabilize it and undermine efforts to establish a local governance model that meets the aspirations of its residents.

Recently, the region has witnessed a serious escalation represented by a coordinated attack by a tripartite alliance comprising Turkey, Iran, and the Syrian regime. Despite the differing strategic goals of these three powers, they intensified their efforts to undermine the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the model of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) in the region. This move reflects the multifaceted nature of the Syrian scene, where many alliances and powers seek at gaining geopolitical and regional interests.

The motivations of the parties involved in this coordinated attack varied significantly, reflecting their goals. Turkey played a pivotal role in planning and coordination for the attack. It has sought to expand its influence in the region to stir unrest and destabilize the area. Thus, it aims to strengthen its negotiating position regarding the Syrian issue. Meanwhile, Iran strives to gain control over a strategic land route for its allies in Syria and Lebanon, primarily Hezbollah. The aim is to enhance its regional influence and ensure the continuation of logistical and military support for its allies. Moreover, the Syrian regime, supported by its ally Russia, attempts to regain control over all Syrian territories to restore its international legitimacy and strengthen its position on future settlements.

However, the decisive popular response in Deir ez-Zor, coupled with the effective coordination between the SDF and the Global Coalition, thwarted these schemes. Also, the tribes and components of the local community supported the SDF. They reflected the social cohesion in the face of external threats. This unified stance emphasizes that the inhabitants of Deir ez-Zor look forward to creating a future based on coexistence and good governance.

In a related context, the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) intensified its diplomatic and political efforts to address the current challenges. That was evident through the numerous initiatives made to enhance community dialogue and improve basic services. Additionally, the SDC strives for fair political representation for all components of the Syrian society. Also, a high-level delegation from the SDC visited Deir ez-Zor, and held meetings with the region’s tribal leaders and dignitaries. This move reflects the importance of strengthening national cohesion among various components of the local community.

The recent events in Deir ez-Zor highlight the immense challenges facing the AANES and the SDF, including as follows:
– Repeated Turkish attacks on critical infrastructure and vital economic facilities in NE Syria.
– The ongoing war against the sleeper cells of the Islamic State (ISIS).
– The attempted incursions in the region by the Syrian regime and Iranian militias.

This multifaceted situation imposes significant challenges regarding security, development, and local governance.

Given these challenges, it is obvious that the stability achieved by the SDF in the region is a significant accomplishment. These forces, with support by the Global Coalition, have succeeded in liberating Deir ez-Zor from the terrorist organization, ISIS, and have ensured the security and stability amid harsh circumstances.
This achievement would not have been possible without the immense sacrifices made by the people of Deir ez-Zor. Also, the cooperation among the various components of the local community played a crucial role in ensuring the stability.

Regarding the AANES, it is essential to highlight the pivotal role it plays in managing the affairs of the region. Despite enormous challenges, the AANES has succeeded in establishing a local governance model based on the principles of participation and fair representation of various components. This model provides essential services to the population, manages local resources well, and promotes coexistence among different social groups.

The experience of the AANES model in Deir ez-Zor represents a bright one for Syria’s future. It explains the possibility of establishing a governance model that responds to the aspirations of Syrians and respects cultural and social diversity. Amidst the absence of a comprehensive political solution to the Syrian crisis, this experience emerges as a model that can achieve stability and development in other regions of Syria.

In conclusion, the peace and stability in all regions of Syria will be achieved if local, regional, and international powers overcome differences. The resilience shown by the people of Deir ez-Zor and the model presented by the SDF and the AANES could meet the aspirations of the Syrian people for freedom, dignity, and social justice.

Nowadays, Deir ez-Zor represents a strategic importance and vital economy. On the other hand, there are conflicts and challenges. Therefore, the role of the international community is crucial in supporting efforts for stability and reconstruction, and ensuring respect for the Syrian people’s will in determining their own destiny.

The challenges facing Deir ez-Zor are essentially the same ones facing all regions of Syria. Success in overcoming these challenges will pave the way for a brighter future for all Syrians. A genuine opportunity based on justice, equality, and respect for diversity can be given to build a new Syria. Deir ez-Zor’s inhabitants will continue to strive for a brighter future for all regions in Syria.
