Statement to the Public on the 21st Anniversary of the 2004 Uprising

Today marks the 21st anniversary of the March 12, 2004 uprising, a pivotal moment in the Kurdish people’s struggle against injustice and oppression. During the uprising, the Baathist regime responded to peaceful demonstrators with gunfire and mass arrests, further reinforcing its repressive policies.

That uprising was a strong call for justice, laying the groundwork for change and overcoming the fear. It helped to pave the way for the Syrian revolution that began in March 2011.

Today, in a new political reality, Syrians are moving beyond tyranny. They are entering a new phase based on justice, national partnership, and respect for pluralism, following the fall of the Baathist regime last December.

The events have shown that the will for change is stronger than the tools of repression. Commemorating this anniversary carries invaluable insights, affirming that past struggles and sacrifices are key to sustaining and advancing the cause of change.

The Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) reaffirms its commitment to working toward a democratic and pluralistic Syria. Such a Syria guarantees fundamental rights, preserves human dignity, and ends the tragedies that Syrians have endured for decades.

The path to a better future lies in strengthening national partnership and entrenching the values of coexistence and peace. It also requires embarking on a political process rooted in historical justice.
