Statement to the Public on the Violence in Sahnaya and Jaramana

The Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) is closely monitoring the dangerous military escalation in Ashrafiyat Sahnaya and Jaramana, in the Rif Dimashq Governorate, with deep concern and caution. This escalation poses a serious threat of spreading violence into the center of the Syrian capital, Damascus.

The SDC strongly condemns all acts of killing, intimidation, hate speech, and sectarian incitement. It calls on all parties to immediately end the violence and exercise restraint. The SDC holds the Damascus authorities fully responsible for the escalation and deterioration of the situation.

The SDC believes that the use of excessive force will push Syria closer to collapse and deepen the divisions created by the former al-Assad regime among Syrians. This approach will also invite greater foreign interference, as external actors—particularly those aiming to destabilize Syria—exploit the chaos. Their goal is to dominate the country and undermine its sovereignty and unity.

Accordingly, the SDC urges the authorities in Damascus to restore calm and ensure security. All ongoing military actions must be halted immediately. In addition, all sources of sectarian incitement and hate speech must be eliminated.

The SDC emphasizes the urgent need to hold a national conference that is truly inclusive. All communities and groups across Syria must be given the opportunity to participate meaningfully. The conference should address the failures of the transitional process and lay the foundation for a modern, democratic constitution.

This new constitution must reflect the sacrifices made by the Syrian people, protect their rights, and embody their aspirations for justice, dignity, and full citizenship.
