Statement on the Syrian People’s Assembly Elections

The Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) has closely monitored the recent elections for the People’s Assembly of Syria. These elections, however, do not reflect the true will of the Syrian people. They failed to represent all regions and components of the country, instead serving as a political performance that neither honors Syria’s long and proud history nor the sacrifices of its people, who have struggled for a new Syria built on democracy, freedom, and genuine participation.

Rather than contributing to national unity and reconciliation, these superficial elections have only deepened divisions within Syrian society.

The Syrian people aspire to real, inclusive elections that genuinely express their will and represent every citizen. Such elections are a national right that cannot be compromised or ignored. They are also a cornerstone for building a democratic and unified state founded on justice, citizenship, and equality among all Syrians.

No electoral process can be considered legitimate unless it involves the participation and representation of all Syrians—both inside the country and abroad—and takes place under international supervision that ensures transparency and integrity. Only then can Syria move toward ending internal division and achieving a just and lasting peace.
