The Syrian Democratic Council

Statement to the Public

The Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) strongly condemns the horrific attack on a bus carrying civilians on the Damascus–Suwayda highway. The assault claimed several lives and left many others injured, including women and children. This heinous act reflects a grave disregard for the sanctity of human life and aims to destabilize the country at a time when Syria is in urgent need of security and civil peace.

We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wish a swift recovery to those who were injured. We also call on the Transitional Government in Damascus to assume its legal, security, and moral responsibilities. This requires launching an immediate and transparent investigation to identify the perpetrators, bring them to justice, and ensure the protection of all citizens across Syria without discrimination. Safeguarding the lives and dignity of Syrians is a national duty that must not be delayed or neglected.

The SDC affirms that such incidents—regardless of their motives or perpetrators—affect all Syrians, irrespective of their affiliations. They also threaten what remains of the foundations of civil peace, which constitute the cornerstone of any inclusive national project. The continuation of violence serves only the forces of extremism and division, deepening the lasting impacts that have burdened our society for years.

In this context, the SDC underscores that combating terrorism, extremism, and violence is an inseparable part of the Syrian people’s struggle for freedom and peace. It is a shared national responsibility that requires coordinated efforts and strengthened cooperation among all forces committed to the unity of the country and the rule of law.

Guided by our national responsibility, we renew our call for an inclusive national dialogue that brings together all political, social, and national forces—free from exclusion or domination. Such a dialogue represents the only realistic path to end the cycle of bloodshed and rebuild trust among Syrians on the basis of justice and equal citizenship.

Moreover, the SDC calls for an immediate end to media incitement and hate speech that sow discord and hinder opportunities for understanding. Media outlets must promote awareness and public responsibility instead of spreading hatred or deepening divisions.

We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to protecting civilians and upholding the values of diversity and justice. Furthermore, we support every sincere national effort aimed at consolidating peace, countering terrorism, and strengthening understanding among all Syrians.
