Statement on the Recent Protests in Syria

The Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) is closely monitoring the developments unfolding in several cities across Syria. In recent days, these areas have witnessed public protests in which members of the Alawite community expressed legitimate concerns and demands related to safety, justice, and an end to ongoing violations.

The SDC affirms that peaceful protest is a fundamental right of all Syrians. It is a civic means for people to express their aspirations and grievances. This right must be protected and respected, without any restrictions or the use of force.

Any attacks, threats, or acts of intimidation directed at any Syrian community are unacceptable. Such incidents require the state to uphold its legal obligations to protect all citizens without discrimination. This includes conducting investigations into violations, ensuring accountability, preventing their recurrence, as well as taking the necessary measures to maintain security, stability, and the rule of law.

In this context, the SDC recalls the resolution adopted by UN Security Council on November 6, 2025. The resolution underscores the need to advance a comprehensive, Syrian-led political transition that guarantees the participation of all components of society. This places an additional responsibility on state institutions to safeguard citizens, respect their basic rights, and respond to their legitimate demands within a unified national framework.

In line with these international calls that emphasize stability and justice, the SDC stresses that addressing the current developments requires full respect for the right to peaceful protest. It also requires ensuring protection for all Syrians without exception, and engaging in a responsible dialogue that places the country’s interests and the unity of its people above all other considerations.

Furthermore, the SDC reaffirms its rejection of any slide toward sectarian incitement, as such rhetoric threatens civil peace and undermines social cohesion. It calls on all political and social actors to approach the current events as a national issue that affects all Syrians, rather than a matter limited to a single community.

The SDC stands with every citizen who seeks their rights through peaceful means. It remains committed to working toward a state governed by law and equal citizenship—one that protects human dignity, guarantees justice and equality, and ensures that all Syrians can participate in shaping their shared national future.
