The Syrian Democratic Council

Message on the Occasion of Christmas

On the occasion of Christmas, the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) extends its warmest greetings and sincere congratulations to Syrians everywhere. It offers special congratulations to the Christian communities, across all churches and denominations. The SDC expresses its hope that this occasion will be marked in Syria amid security, stability, and prosperity.

Christmas, with its messages of love, peace, and hope, comes this year as Syria stands at the threshold of a pivotal historical moment. It is a moment in which all Syrians aspire to build a state based on citizenship and justice. A state that moves beyond the authoritarianism, repression, and exclusion, and that lays the foundations for a new social contract grounded in full equality among all citizens.

Syrian Christians have long been a cornerstone of Syria’s civilization and have played a vital role in enriching its national culture. Syria’s religious, ethnic, and cultural diversity remains its true source of strength. It is a shared responsibility to safeguard and entrench this diversity within a just state that respects all its citizens and guarantees equal rights and opportunities for everyone.

The new era we seek for Syria must represent a clear and permanent departure from the painful experiences of the past. It must move beyond decades of authoritarian rule and the monopolization of power that the country endured under Baath Party governance. There is no place in a new Syria for the dominance of any single party, ideology, or group. Instead, Syria must become a genuinely pluralistic state, founded on the peaceful transfer of power and on respect for the right of all citizens to participate in political activities and to freely express their views.

We believe that the new Syria must be a homeland for all its people. It must safeguard rights and freedoms while respecting diversity within the framework of national unity. Equal citizenship is the cornerstone of building a modern democratic state—one governed by the rule of law and shaped through the meaningful participation of all groups within society. This vision stands in clear contrast to the exclusion and marginalization that defined previous eras.

Today, Syrians are presented with a historic opportunity to overcome decades of injustice and terror and to embark on a genuine national path toward freedom and justice. Seizing this moment requires uniting around shared national principles, rejecting hatred and exclusion, and embracing dialogue as the primary means of building the future.

Warm wishes to the Syrian people on this occasion
Merry Christmas
