The Syrian Democratic Council

Public Statement

The Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) is closely monitoring, with deep concern, the recent developments in the city of Kobani. These events followed an unacceptable act by an individual who removed the Syrian state flag. This incident was followed by tense reactions that spread to several areas, including the northern countryside of Aleppo, Afrin, Azaz, Hasakah and Qamishli.

The SDC affirms that this act was an individual action that does not represent the will of the people of the region or the positions of national forces. At the same time, it rejects all reactions that were retaliatory or violated the law. Such actions pose a direct threat to social stability and to the unity of Syrian society.

At this sensitive stage that the country is going through, and as efforts toward national recovery and integration are beginning to move forward based on existing agreements, any individual actions or irresponsible reactions can undermine stability. They can threaten social peace and create tensions that do not serve the interests of Syria or its people.

The SDC reaffirms that the Syrian state flag is a unifying national symbol. Respect for it has been emphasized in official positions, as it represents an expression of national sovereignty. Moreover, the SDC stresses that Kurdish symbols are an essential part of Syria’s diverse national identity. Any action that targets these symbols risks creating division and serves agendas that do not benefit the Syrian people.

The SDC also underscores that any violations, acts of incitement, or assaults—regardless of their source or location across Syria—must be addressed in accordance with the law. Those responsible must be held accountable and referred to justice. This is essential to ensure that there is no impunity and that the rights of all citizens are protected.

Today, Syria is in urgent need of strengthening the values of national reconciliation and reinforcing social unity. It is equally important to reject all forms of division and disorder.
On this basis, the SDC calls on all forces and community actors to act with a high sense of national responsibility, to work toward calming the situation, and to avoid any actions that may lead to further tension or threaten stability.

The SDC also urges the relevant security and judicial institutions in all areas to fully carry out their responsibilities. This includes protecting citizens, addressing violations, and enforcing the law in a way that ensures justice and promote civil peace.
