The Syrian Democratic Council

Greetings on the Assyrian-Babylonian New Year (Akitu)

On the occasion of the Assyrian-Babylonian New Year, “Akitu,” the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) extends its sincere congratulations and best wishes to the Syriac Assyrian people in Syria. On this historic occasion, it recalls the deep historical and cultural presence of these communities as an integral part of the Syrian national fabric.

Syria, with its ethnic, cultural, and religious diversity, draws from this diversity a source of strength and resilience rather than division. Preserving this shared heritage is essential. Developing a national constitution that guarantees the rights of all communities and strengthens their active participation in building the future of Syria is a key foundation for a just and stable state.

The SDC bases its work on this firm belief. It is convinced that the Syria we seek can only be achieved through a democratic and pluralistic system, in which every identity has its rightful and protected place. At the same time, all identities are united within a shared national identity that includes everyone without exclusion or marginalization. The celebration of “Akitu” by the Syriac Assyrian community represents a renewal of life and hope. It is also a reminder that this diversity is a core part of the Syria we aim to build.

The SDC also affirms the importance of recognizing “Akitu” as a national holiday. This recognition should reflect its historical and cultural significance. It should also demonstrate the commitment of a future Syrian state to respecting diversity and protecting the rights of all its communities.

Happy Akitu
