Statement on the Rising Water Level of the Euphrates River and Its Impact on Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor

The Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) is following with deep concern the serious developments related to the rising water level of the Euphrates River. These rising waters have already caused damage in several areas of Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor. This is happening amid complex and exceptional climate conditions, as well as structural challenges that the region’s infrastructure has suffered from since the war years.

The SDC extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims who lost their lives as a result of this disaster. It also affirms that the safety of civilians and the protection of public and private property are an absolute priority. This priority cannot be delayed or politicized.
The SDC calls on the Syrian Interim Government and all administrative and service bodies in the affected areas to assume their full responsibilities. It demands urgent actions to address flood risks. It also calls for immediate relief for civilians and insists on ensuring that such disasters do not recur or expand.

Also, the SDC warns that a potential humanitarian catastrophe — if water levels continue to rise — demands an urgent international response. This response should include support for emergency teams, the rehabilitation of damaged infrastructure, and fair and organized compensation for those affected.

Furthermore, the SDC emphasizes that stability in the region is a collective responsibility. Overcoming the current crises requires comprehensive Syrian national coordination and it must not be driven by self-serving political motives. It must serve the future of Syria, its unity, and the stability of its people.

Moreover, the SDC calls for the activation of urgent regional and international mechanisms to manage the situation of the Euphrates River in a sustainable and fair manner. Such mechanisms should guarantee the rights of all parties and prevent the recurrence of crises. They should also lay the foundation for shared relations based on cooperation and regional integration.
