The Syrian Democratic Council

Statement to the Public Opinion

Turkish threats of a military attack on the border areas of northern and eastern Syria have escalated and these threats have peaked while the implementation of the security mechanism continues and SDF is committed to all its commitments towards this agreement which refutes Turkey’s security concerns regarding its borders. Turkish threats should have ended to prepare the atmosphere for expansion of Syrian internal dialogue to launch a fair political process involving effecting Syrian parties, led by the Syrian Democratic Council and Self-Administration for North and East Syria. On the contrary, the Turkish side began to complain and threatens to turn upside down the table. This proves that Turkish government is untruthful and unserious regarding this understanding. Thus, the Turkish attempts to launch military strikes on the region are inseparable from excluding the representation of the Syrian Democratic Council and Self-Administration from formation of the Constitutional Commission. Such exclusion of our representatives from Constitutional Commission structure is nothing more than an attempt to reproduce dictarship under international patronage . This proves that the project of self-administration is the only one on the agenda that is feared and capable of achieving a real change in mentality and structure of tyranny in Syria. In addition to all of the above, is contrary to international legitimacy and It represents a tendency towards emptying all international resolutions from their contents, including resolution 2254, which takes into account the objective of bringing together the broadest spectrum of opposition chosen by Syrians who will decide who will represent them in negotiations and determine their negotiating positions, so that the political process can launch . We affirm that Turkish ongoing threats have led ISIS to move its members back into the Syrian desert and encourages the activity of its sleeping cells as well. These threats will increase the willingness of other regional parties to rearrange their cards and prepare to fill any vacuum that SDF might leave after its potential preoccupation with continuous tension on the border. The accelerated events in Deir Ezzor confirm the validity of our fears. In light of all these rapid developments and threats aimed at security of the Syrian border, the Syrian authorities in Damascus did not take any serious procedures to denounce the Turkish threats, but resorted to justify the Turkish threats by making various accusations against the Syrian Democratic Forces and reminding Turkey of possibility of returning to Adana Agreement as a gateway to intersection of interests of both parties, Hence, at this critical stage in life of Syria, we call upon all Syrians, without exception, to review their positions, to present the national interest and interests of Syrian people on any other consideration. The Syrian Democratic Council condemns Turkish escalation and calls upon international community to take frank position towards the Turkish threats, and it calls upon “the International Coalition Against Terrorism” for more efforts to stop the Turkish plans aimed at security and stability in the region. SDC warns of a major humanitarian catastrophe if Turkey carries out its threats in light of grave concerns of people of the region, especially Christians and Yazidis, whose presence had been directly targeted by jihadist factions of Turkey, in addition to threatening of Kurdish national presence which is the main objectives of the policy of democratic change in the region . In addition to this, Arabs of the region refuse policies of Turkificatin practiced by Turkey. We call on all Syrian citizens from far south to far north and from the Tigris east to the sea coast in the west to do their national role and express their rejection for the attempts by Turkey to occupy north-east of Syria. We also call on people of northeastern Syria, Arabs, Kurds, Syriacs, Assyrians, Armenians and Turkmen to stand united, provide all support to SDF to defend the region and preserve all democratic gains achieved.
