Today, the Women’s Office of the Syrian Democratic Council appealed, through a statement, to the international community, women’s defense bodies, human rights organizations and women’s movements in the world, to play their role in protecting women in Afrin and ending the Turkish occupation of Afrin region and the entire Syrian lands.
The statement pointed out that the recent events that took place in Afrin and revealed the detention of dozens of women by the factions associated with Turkey, has unveiled another chapter of the crimes committed by the Turkish state and its mercenaries against the remaining original residents of Afrin, especially women.
The Women’s Office of SDC called through its statement, to form an international fact-finding committee and work to hold perpetrators of these crimes accountable and bring them to international courts.
The statement stated :
“The Turkish state violated all international norms and laws by occupying the Syrian territories, occupying Azaz, AL- Bab, Jarablus, Idlib, Afrin, Ras al-Ain and Tal Abyad. The Turkish occupation implemented Turkification in all these Syrian regions, wreaked havoc on corruption, chaos, destruction, violence wherever it went and committed crimes that amount to crimes against humanity.
In Afrin, the Turkish occupation state and its mercenaries have pursued a policy of ethnic genocide, forced displacement and demographic change, and targeted women in particular to break the will of women and subjugate them, because they stand in the way of their expansionist and occupation ambitions and plans. Women have been and still have the most prominent role in combating the terrorist organization ISIS, the Turkish occupier and its mercenaries.
Syrian women have played a pivotal role in all levels, especially political and administrative ones, in addition to their effective organizational role. Therefore, the Turkish occupier and its mercenaries have targeted them since the beginning of their occupation of north Syrian.
The recent events that took place in Afrin, specifically the clashes that broke out among mercenary factions associated with Turkish state, unveiled another chapter on suffering of Afrin women and revealed to us the brutality of Turkey and its mercenaries in dealing with the detainees, where dozens of Afrin women were found in an abusive situation and they were subjected to various forms of violence and abuse, particularly physical, sexual and psychological abuses.
We in the Women’s Office of the Syrian Democratic Council – SDC, appeal to and call upon the international community, women’s defense and freedom organizations, all human rights organizations and women’s movements to play their role in protecting women. We also demand the necessity of ending the Turkish occupation, expelling its mercenaries, ensuring the safe return of original people of Afrin and forming a fact-finding committee of the United Nations and the International Court to hold perpetrators of these crimes accountable in Syria and to provide the necessary support to protect women.”
