Coinciding with the oncoming of March 8th, International Women’s Day, the Women’s Bureau of the Syrian Democratic Council held its second activities in Al-Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood in Aleppo, where it held a dialogue seminar entitled “Syrian women, their reality, challenges and achievements”, under the slogan “We protect our revolution and liberate our territories together”, in the presence of women figures, politicians, intellectuals and representatives of political parties.
Najla Hamza, the administrator in Women’s Bureau of the SDC, made a speech for the seminar, congratulated all women of the world on the occasion of March 8th, spoke about the importance of this day and talked about the struggle of female leaders who demanded equality and Justice.
For her part, a member of the women’s Bureau, Jihan Muhammed Ali, pointed out the reality of Syrian women and their suffering. ”Since the establishment of the idea of the ruling party, the policy towards women is a policy of double standards towards women, and on the one hand it claimed to advocate for women’s rights but remained theoretically, and this is evidenced by its reservation to some articles of the CEDAW convention.” She said.
Regarding women’s participation in the political field, she said that the ruling authority has not hesitated to hinder the women’s participation in the fields of life, especially a political one. The most important obstacles facing women’s participation is the constitutional articles, especially there are no articles in the Syrian Constitution specifying the percentage of women’s participation (quota) as well as the Personal Status Law.
She touched on the challenges facing women in the Syrian areas occupied by the Turkish state, in which she said that the role of women in those areas is completely abolished in all aspects of life, as women in those areas are subjected to an arrest, the forced absence and the sexual assault.
She also pointed out the leading role of women in the regions of northern and eastern Syria at all military, political, social, economic and cultural levels.
She added that women in northern and eastern Syria were able to prove themselves in the fields of politics and diplomacy and participated in many international conferences to discuss the Syrian issue as well as they added a Democratic form to these relations through their involvement in the formulation of the political decision.
The seminar was concluded with participations by female participants, where they talked about the importance of the role of women in society and the need for their participation in the political work and touched on solutions, especially with regard to amending laws and preserving their constitutional rights, which were and still the most important obstacles facing women.
The female participants stressed the need to create a democratic political system that guarantees their rights and be accordance with a constitution, increasing the awareness, training of women and their participation in parliamentary elections and decision-making centers, accept the articles of the CEDAW Convention, and the importance of implementing of Security Council resolutions, especially Resolution 1325 and subsequent resolutions that serve the protection of women in periods of conflict and their participation in the process of peacemaking effectively.
