The Women’s Bureau of the Syrian Democratic Council held a dialogue seminar entitled “Highlights in the history of Syrian women” on Saturday, March 12th, in celebration of International Women’s Day where all female activists in civil administrations, councils, political parties and independent figures were invited in the council’s center in Raqqa.
“Syrian women had a history that was before the Ottoman rule of Syria, where Syrian women overcame previous challenges through the diversity of forms of movement that they adopted to express their views in society, “ said the administrator of the Women’s Bureau, Thubya Al-Nassir.
Al-Nassir resumed talking about the examples of Syrian women in modern history who were able to have an influence over the past century, such as Marianna Marash, Mary Al-Ajami, Zakia Hanano, who participated in the fighting against French people, and then Soraya Hafez, Jehan Mosilli, Suad Nofal and others.
Since the start of the Syrian Revolution in early 2011, women had a clear involvement in it, but the region in 2014 witnessed the establishment of the Autonomous Administration as it was accompanied by an increase in women’s activity, where Al-Nassir noted that “the most characteristic of the Autonomous Administration is its Social Contract, which is like the Constitution and indicates that the participation rate of women is not less than 50%”.
“Women in our regions have assumed a privileged position unlike other Syrian regions thanks to the support of the political will represented by the Syrian Democratic Council, which supports women’s rights.” Thubya Al-Nassir said.
“Our work is to promote the reality of Syrian women and society as an integrated work” said Maysoun Muhammed, spokeswoman for the Women’s Bureau of the Council of Idlib, after talking about the experiences of women in Idlib, which is controlled by extremist organizations.
This seminar was concluded by the activities of the International Women’s Day, where the Women’s Bureau of the Syrian Democratic Council participated in most of which included several events, parties and gifting of roses in coordination with the common events forum for women’s movements and organizations in northern and eastern Syria.
