The Syrian Democratic Council

A discussion about the latest developments with an elite group of Raqqa people

On Wednesday, the SDC participated with an elite group of those interested in public affairs in Raqqa the repercussions and effects of “the rapprochement between Ankara and Damascus” on the Syrian issue and the Syrian refugees, in the meeting room of the Syrian Democratic Council in Raqqa.

A number of members of political parties, intellectuals, independent personalities, civil and media activists from Raqqa, discussed a major question raised by the Relations Bureau of the Syrian Democratic Council.

What are the repercussions of the rapprochement between Ankara and Damascus and its effects on the Syrian issue and the refugees?

The participants of the symposium discussed the repercussions of this rapprochement on the Syrian people, the areas of the Autonomous Administration, north of Syria, and the refugees as well.

A member of the Executive Body of the Syrian Democratic Council, Ali Rahmoun, stated that “Turkey interfered a lot in the Syrian crisis, and when it failed militarily by its latest threats to launch an operation in late 2022, it started to praise the authority in Damascus”.

Rahmon added that Turkey is one of the guarantor countries for the Astana process which was to undermine the content of UN resolution 2254, and Turkey seeks reconciliation with Damascus for two reasons, the first of which is to confront its economic, internal and electoral crises, in addition to an attempt to blackmail Russia and the international community and eliminate the experience of the Syrian people in the regions of northeastern Syria.

The leader of the Syrian Democratic Council revealed that there is a diplomatic delegation that will go to Washington soon and will present many points to reduce Turkish threats and work for democratic change in order to reach a just political resolution for the Syrian issue in accordance with international resolutions.

While the opinions of the attendees varied and they discussed the widespread popular condemnation throughout the country, and it developed in the city of Azaz and in other areas that are subjected to Turkish occupation and control into demonstrations rejecting the rapprochement, and the demonstrators in those areas called for the expulsion of the representatives of the “opposition” that is dependent on the Turkish will, and the participants in the symposium believed that “this rapprochement is not in the interest of the Syrian people and the unity of their territories, but rather aims to end the democratic project. The participants indicated that Turkish President Erdogan tries to win the votes of the voters, as he uses refugees and Syrians in the regions of northwestern Syria”.

For her part, Jumana Al-Khalaf said that they do not underestimate the danger of this rapprochement between “Ankara and Damascus” in northeastern Syria, and they work as a party to educate the people about this danger and raise voices by rejecting it, as it undermines the political resolution for the Syrian crisis.

In turn, Hussein Ibrahim, a member of the Syrian Democratic Alliance Party, indicated that Turkey wants to occupy more Syrian territories and eliminate any successful administrative experience for the Syrian people.

Ibrahim continued his speech by saying that there must be an intra-Syrian dialogue that takes into account the interests of the entire Syrian people and preserves their territory.

The tripartite meeting held in Moscow in late December in the presence of the defense ministers of Russia, Turkey and Syria was denounced by several Syrian parties rejecting the agreements that aren’t in accordance with the efforts of the political resolution and international resolution 2254.
