Highlighting the significant importance of women’s role in both political and social spheres, the Women’s Bureau of the Syrian Democratic Council, in collaboration with the Syrian Women’s Council, organized a dialogue symposium titled “The Role of Women in Society and Politics” at the headquarters of the Syrian Democratic Council in Al-Hasakah city.
The symposium was attended by several women representatives from political parties and civil institutions. They discussed the role of women in the northeastern regions of Syria at various levels, particularly their significant political representation and their role in society.
During the symposium, the media representative of the Syrian Women’s Council, Lauren Ali, discussed the transformative empowering of women from being constrained by traditional customs and traditions to actively participating alongside men while preserving the values and cultural heritage of the community.
On speaking about women’s role in politics, Avin Muhammed Amin, a member of the Women’s Bureau of the Syrian Democratic Council in Al-Hasakah, stated that “Women’s participation in politics is one of the essential elements of democracy, reflecting the political and social regime in the country”.
She emphasized that women’s participation holds great significance in politics through several aspects, such as transitioning women from the private sphere represented by the family to the public sphere of society and the state. This participation also helps in sharing visions between men and women, defending women’s issues, and ensuring their representation and involvement in decision-making processes to secure their rights.
Rima Mahmoud, an administrator at the Star Conference, mentioned that one of the main obstacles hindering women’s progress is the conservative mindset of certain families, in which women’s councils in the northeastern regions of Syria are responsible for that, and this is due to their lack of engagement with women’s affairs in distant areas and the absence of suitable conditions for their political or institutional participation. She stressed the importance of following women’s affairs in all areas of northeastern Syria to achieve the true objectives of the women’s revolution at all levels.
The symposium was concluded with a speech by Feryal Ahmed, a member of the Women’s Committee in the northern region, acknowledging the remarkable role played by women in the northeastern regions of Syria, where they have presented the highest examples of sacrifice. She mentioned the late Hevrin Khalaf, one of the prominent female politicians in the region, and expressed messages of support and empowerment for women in all fields. She emphasized the necessity of supporting women in all regions and their political efforts carried out by the Syrian Democratic Council on the political arena in the midst of hard circumstances in the country.
