Syrian Women Demand the Implementation of the UN Resolution 2254

A group of Syrian women called for the implementation of the UN Resolution 2254 during their participation in a dialogue seminar organized by the Women’s Bureau of the Syrian Democratic Council on Wednesday in the city of Raqqa.

The seminar was attended by a number of women and girls who are from Raqqa and involved in the administrative work in civil institutions, as well as representatives and deputies, particularly Hevin Ismail, the Co-Chairwoman of the Civil Council of Raqqa.

The seminar took place amid special international circumstances surrounding the Syrian crisis. Fatima Al-Muhammed, a member of the Women’s Bureau of the Syrian Democratic Council, discussed the international conditions that led to the issuance of Resolution 2254 and its significance for Syrians.
She highlighted the importance of the fourth and sixth clauses of the Security Council resolution, in which the former supports a Syrian political process facilitated by the United Nations and the formulation of a new constitution, while the latter calls for the cessation of hostilities and assigns this task to the Secretary-General.

Meanwhile, Thubiyah Al-Nasser, an administrator of the Women’s Bureau of the Syrian Democratic Council, affirmed that all meetings, the Arab summit, and statements in Jeddah and Amman have recognized the importance of this resolution due to its call for the stability desired by all Syrians.

Al-Nasser added that Syrian People who are living in difficult humanitarian conditions will not return to the situation before 2011, and that is why this Resolution is important as it seeks to involve all Syrians, sets a timeframe, and addresses the lack of awareness about the resolution, which has led to its selective implementation of some clauses at the expense of others.

On another note, Samira Al-Ahmad, a Deputy of the Raqqa Defense Bureau, spoke about the necessity of taking a political stance that calls for dialogue, opposes injustice and terrorism, and urges Syrians to resolve their crisis through peaceful means and dialogue in accordance with international resolutions.

Regarding the role of Syrian women, Hevin Ismail, the Co-Chairwoman of the Civil Council of Raqqa, stated that the application of the sixteen clauses of the UN Resolution would provide women with genuine participation, as it calls for peace and security. She emphasized that women have been the biggest losers during the Syrian crisis and she considered the Revolution of the July 19th as a turning point in their participation.

In conclusion, the organizing committee of the seminar emphasized the importance of informing women about the details of this Resolution, which is considered the key for resolving all Syrian issues. The committee members stated that they will continue to organize such seminars, targeting different segments of Syrian women in various regions.
