“We are open to engage in talks with national political powers in occupied territories”- SDC

The Presidential Body of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) stated that Turkish threats and hostility towards the components of North and East Syria and their national project are considered to be the main obstacle to national solutions to the Syrian crisis. It affirmed an openness to engage in talks with all national powers in the occupied territories. The aim is to end the occupation and achieve democratic transition.

The SDC’s Presidential Body held its regular meeting on Monday, with the presence of Layla Qaraman, Co-chairwoman of the SDC, Mahmoud al-Mislat, Co-chairman of the SDC, Deputies of the SDC’s Co-chairs, and Heads of the SDC’s Offices.

The participants in the meeting observed a minute of silence to remember the martyrs of freedom in Syria, followed by a comprehensive assessment of the current political situation and crises at the international, regional, and local levels. Also, they discussed the multiple tensions and conflicts which have severe impacts on the Syrian crisis that has been ongoing for more than a decade.

The SDC’s Co-chairs stressed that finding a comprehensive solution for the Syrian issue should take the priority by the international community. They underscored that through their comprehensive political briefing on the latest developments in the region and their repercussions on the Syrian issue.

The Body addressed Turkish threats and continuous targeting of the region and its infrastructure. It emphasized that the Turkey’s threats and hostility towards the components of North and East Syria and their democratic national project are considered to be the most prominent obstacle to national solutions to the Syrian crisis.

The Body stated that the SDC is open to engage in talks with all national powers in the occupied territories. The aim is to unite all Syrians, end the occupation and achieve democratic transition.

During the discussions and political analyzes, the participants in the meeting made it clear that Arab countries play the main role in finding a settlement for the Syrian crisis in accordance with international resolutions that preserve the unity of the country.

The Body reiterated the importance of continuing the path of the intra-Syrian dialogue and engaging in discussions with various segments of Syrian society. The aim is to create common visions for national powers, activities, and democratic figures. Additionally, the Body seeks to achieve agreements that lead to establish a national front aiming at finding a way out of the Syrian crisis.

The meeting addressed the situation in the Syrian regions, especially the ongoing popular movement in Suwayda against the authority in Damascus and against the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly, al-Nusra Front) in northwestern Syria.

The meeting also discussed organizational matters and the continuation of work in accordance with the national strategy across all Syrian regions.

At the end of the meeting, the participants presented monthly reports for the Body’s members who reviewed the work plans and programs of the SDC’s offices for June. Also, it is scheduled that a wide-ranging forum of civil society will be held in June.
