On November 1, 2024, marks the tenth anniversary of the International Day of Solidarity with Kobani. We, as members of the Syrian Democratic Council, commemorate the courageous resistance of the people of Kobani against the brutal terrorist attacks of the Islamic State (ISIS). That resistance has become a global symbol of the struggle against the extremism, tyranny and terrorism.
When the ISIS attacked the city of Kobani in 2014, it aimed to undermine the principles of pluralism, democracy, and coexistence. However, the steadfastness, cohesion and sacrifices of people of Kobani turned this struggle into a pivotal turning point in the global fight against terrorism.
The international solidarity with Kobani at that time demonstrated a shared human responsibility to combat extremism. Local resistance, supported by the international community, defended human values and the principles of peaceful coexistence.
The heroic sacrifices of all segments of Syrian society in the fight against terrorism have played a crucial role in uniting the Syrian people. They emphasized that the unity of the Syria’s national fabric serves as a powerful defense against efforts to divide and destabilize the country.
Currently, there are new challenges represented by the ongoing Turkish attacks on the regions of northeastern Syria. These attacks target civilians and infrastructure in an attempt to undermine the democratic project of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES). They pose a direct threat to the stability of NE Syria and hinder the progress towards a democratic and just society.
We call on the international community to fulfill its moral and legal obligations. Specifically, we urge the powers that supported the resistance in Kobane to take decisive action. Also, it is imperative to protect the gains achieved in the war on terror. Furthermore, we call for a firm stance against Turkey’s ongoing violations of international law and human rights in the region.
The project of the AANES, which emerged from the resistance in Kobane, aims to establish a governance model that reflects the aspirations of the Syrian people. It focuses on principles of peaceful coexistence and efficient administration. Therefore, we reaffirm our commitment to the continuous development of this project. Additionally, we will strengthen governance mechanisms to serve the interests of all components of the Syrian society and guarantee their rights. Drawing on the unity and community solidarity exemplified in Kobani, we will continue to build a better future.
