Statement on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

On November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, we, as members of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC), commemorate the Mirabal sisters, who represent symbols of resistance and feminist activism. Also, we recommit our dedication to the struggle against all forms of violence and discrimination faced by women. This day holds a significant symbolic value in the global women’s struggle for freedom, dignity, and equality. Systemic violence and gender-based discrimination have increased significantly this year in many parts of the world.

This occasion comes at a time when Syrian women face extremely dire circumstances due to the ongoing conflict that has begun in Syria in 2011. The conflict has exacerbated discrimination and violence in various forms, including poverty, marginalization, torture, killing, and enforced disappearance. The situation has deteriorated significantly in areas occupied by Turkish forces and their affiliated militias, where systemic violations against women are perpetrated on a large scale.

We believe that the escalating violence against Syrian women is linked to the prevailing patriarchal culture, discriminatory laws, and the repercussions of the ongoing conflict. Given this dire situation, we must take decisive action to struggle for change and promote equality.

We pay tribute to the resilience of Syrian women and their unwavering struggle for freedom and democratic change. We also reaffirm that empowering women by ensuring their rights is not only a humanitarian imperative but also a fundamental cornerstone for achieving peace and sustainable development in Syria.

Accordingly, we call upon the international community, human rights organizations, and women’s movements to intensify their efforts to support Syrian women. Additionally, we emphasize the need to expose the violent practices and abuses women face by authoritarian regimes and occupying forces.

Furthermore, we urge all Syrian women to unite and stand together to consolidate their visions and goals, and to work collectively to end the violence against women. Women’s participation in the political process and decision-making is essential for ensuring the success of any sustainable political solution in Syria.

In conclusion, we affirm that women’s freedom is fundamental to the freedom of society as a whole, and that the struggle to end violence and discrimination against women is an integral part of our struggle for justice and dignity for all Syrians.
