On the 14th anniversary of the Syrian Revolution, we honor the sacrifices of the Syrian people. They rose up demanding freedom, dignity, and justice. Their struggle was against an authoritarian regime that had deprived them of their rights for decades.
The popular movement embodied the national will to build a democratic and pluralistic state. This state was envisioned to be founded on the rule of law and respect for human rights.
Today, Syria faces a critical juncture. Following the fall of al-Assad’s regime last December, the country is marked by significant challenges. Violence continues to plague some areas. The lasting effects of years of conflicts and divisions are still deeply felt across the country. The recent escalation in the Syria’s coastal region and the resulting civilian casualties highlight an urgent need. An immediate nationwide ceasefire is essential. Also, violence must end to pave the way for stability and peace.
Furthermore, the recent constitutional declaration has proven disappointing. It was supposed to be a step toward realizing the aspirations of the Syrian people. However, it fails to adequately reflect their ambitions for a just and democratic state. Therefore, the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) emphasizes the necessity of comprehensive political solutions. These solutions must account for the complexities of the Syrian reality. They must also respect the pluralism and diversity that have long defined Syria.
Achieving the goals of the revolution goes beyond merely changing the regime. It requires diligent efforts to build a new regime that must truly represent the will of all Syrians. Additionally, it must guarantee their rights and uphold the principles of justice and democracy. The future that the Syrian people deserve is one rooted in national consensus. It must respect their aspirations and ensure their freedom and dignity.
