The anniversary of the July 19 Revolution marks a defining moment in the Syrian people’s struggle for freedom, dignity, and justice. On this day in 2012, a unique democratic initiative emerged from the city of Kobani, laying the foundation for a transformative experience in Northeast Syria. It was a turning point where the collective will of diverse communities came together to shape a new model of governance. This model was rooted in inclusion, justice, and shared decision-making. It rejected marginalization and embraced self-administration, grounded in the principles of pluralism and human rights.
The July 19 Revolution demonstrated that genuine change is not achieved merely by dismantling authoritarian regimes. True transformation requires the establishment of viable political and administrative alternatives that must be grounded in fair representation and sound governance. These values are especially relevant today, as the security situation deteriorates in Al-Suwayda Governorate. Escalating tensions and the alarming targeting of the Druze community raise serious concerns.
The Druze have long been a cornerstone of Syria’s national fabric. The repeated targeting of Syria’s social components not only threatens communal harmony, but also poses a grave danger to the future of civil peace and national unity. This moment calls for a national response that goes beyond sectarian or partisan loyalties and addresses the root causes of division with honesty and determination.
The current events unfolding in Al-Suwayda underscore, once again, the urgent need for a national democratic project. Such a project must guarantee dignity and protection for all Syrians, without discrimination. It should also affirm a shared future grounded in pluralism and mutual recognition.
In this context, we express our deep regret over the continued absence of a clear and effective vision from the Syrian Interim Government regarding these critical issues. Its role in safeguarding national cohesion and promoting stability is insufficient or not meeting expectations. This absence of effective action creates space for actors and agendas that seek to undermine the little social trust that still exists.
We firmly condemn any attempt to exploit crises along security or sectarian lines. Escalation and division are not inevitable outcomes. Incendiary rhetoric serves only the enemies of democracy and meaningful change. We call on all national actors to work toward de-escalation and to prioritize reason and dialogue. They must also stand united against all efforts to sow discord or reintroduce the tools of repression under new guises.
On the anniversary of the July 19 Revolution, we issue a unified national appeal to all Syrians. Let this occasion be a moment to recall the founding values of the revolution—dignity, justice, diversity, and participation. We must renew our collective commitment to the shared struggle for a democratic, decentralized, and pluralistic Syria. This is a Syria that embraces all its communities and seeks to end the suffering that has persisted for more than a decade.
