The Syrian Democratic Council

Public Statement

The Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) condemns in the strongest terms the shelling that targeted the Sheikh Maqsoud and Al-Ashrafiyah neighborhoods in Aleppo, which resulted in civilian casualties. This attack has occurred amidst a suffocating siege and represented a direct targeting of populated residential areas by factions affiliated with the Syrian Interim Government.

We cannot consider this incident an isolated security event. Rather, it constitutes dangerous behavior that shatters the foundations of societal peace and undermines any claim of commitment to political solutions. We hold the Interim Government fully responsible for these violations, whether through direct action or failure to control its affiliated factions.

The timing of this escalation is deeply troubling. It coincides with diplomatic engagements outside Syria concerning core sovereign and security issues. This simultaneity raises serious questions about whether what is negotiated in confidential talks is being enforced by violence on the ground.

The use of civilians as leverage, or leaving them exposed to violence during sensitive political moments, is an extremely dangerous practice that is neither acceptable nor tolerable.

We warn that the continuation of this approach will only deepen division, weaken any negotiated path, and turn the political process into a hollow, formal cover. We categorically reject any political understandings, at any level, that are advanced at the expense of civilian security or the rights of any Syrian community.

Nevertheless, we reaffirm that our firm choice remains dialogue and peace. True peace, however, cannot be forged amidst bombardment and siege. It requires three non-negotiable foundations: an immediate ceasefire, the effective protection of civilians, and a clear, verifiable commitment to a comprehensive and just political settlement. This settlement must unequivocally guarantee the rights of all Syrians, without compromise or exception.
