Under the slogan “Organized Women are the Basis for Building a Democratic, Pluralistic and Decentralized Syria,” the Syrian Women Council organized on September 8th, a celebration for its second anniversary with participation of women activists, civil society institutions and political parties.
Representatives from Self-Administration of Northern and Eastern Syria, as well as Deputy President of the Executive Committee of the Syrian Democratic Council, Nojeen Yussef, and the Women Office in SDC, in addition to a number of activists in the field of human rights and culture.
The celebration began with a welcoming speech by General Coordinator of Syrian Women Council, Lina Barakat. She gave a summary about the history of the Council and its establishment two years ago in Manbij city with participation of more than 200 women from different Syrian regions.
Referring to the objective for which the Women Council was established, Barakat said:
“The Syrian Women Council was established to be the voice of Syrian women, to demand their rights, to gain their freedom and to restore their role in all fields of life.”
Barakat described that the Syrian Women Council has been able to take remarkable steps and be the focus of the hopes of women who have suffered from injustice, tyranny and exclusion. The Council also seeks to reserve a place for women in shaping the new Syria through participation in decision-making positions.
The Women Office of the Syrian Democratic Council also had a speech delivered by Amal Shamdain, where she congratulated all those present on the second anniversary of the founding of the Syrian Women Council. She considered the establishment of the Council two years ago a step in the right direction in order women restore their missed rights and activate their leadership role in leading the society.
During her speech, Shamdeen touched on the achievements of women in northern and eastern Syria, from their participation in elimination of the terrorist organization ISIS to enactment of laws on women and protection of their rights, as well as building their own institutions through participation in the administration and proving their worth in all areas.
This was followed by the speech of General Council of Self-Administration of Northern and Eastern Syria, read by the Joint Chair of General Council , Siham Qario, where she said:
“ The Syrian Women Council is the national and social project that has worked to unite ranks of Syrian women and their abilities inside Syria and abroad in all their ethnic, national, cultural, ideological and sectarian spectrums, believimg that they can take their responsibilities in saving Syrian homeland from its painful wounds. ”
The ceremony also included poems by some of the participants, in addition to songs by some music bands. The ceremony ended by showing ” videos ” summarizing work of the Council over the past two years.
