Political Parties and Formations discuss the Concept of “Decentralization” in Aleppo

On Thursday, June 16th, at the invitation of the Syrian Democratic Council, a number of political parties and figures interested in public affairs held a dialogue seminar to discuss the concept of “decentralization, its necessities and models”, in Al-Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood in Aleppo.

The seminar discussed the historical root of “decentralization” in Syria and the formation of the Syrian state, where Fatima Al-husseino, a member of the Relations Bureau of the Syrian Democratic Council, pointed out that decentralization was existed in Syria and the governance regime and that the first roots of decentralization date back to the establishment of the Syrian Kingdom and the adoption of the first constitution of the country, which was known as the Faisal Constitution then.

During her speech, Al-husseino touched on the concept of decentralization, its necessities and models in terms of administrative, political and democratic decentralization.

“The Autonomous Administration is an administrative embodiment of the concept of democratic decentralization, and it organizes itself within mechanisms and powers as a part of the general Syrian administrative regime,” she added.

In conclusion, Al-husseino stressed that “The transition to a decentralized regime that enjoys the democratic character, needs major efforts to deepen the level of political culture, and requires the adaptation of educational, cultural and media curricula towards establishing the concept of democratic citizenship that will affect all fields of life, and the process of participation and political representation”.

Participants including parties, human rights and political figures considered that the Syrian situation has become a necessary case for Syrians to discuss the form of future governance after the failure of the central regime. During their participations, they touched upon the concept of decentralization and stressed that decentralization is an urgent necessity in Syria, which needs to unify the language of dialogue and support the decentralized path to enhance the participation of all Syrian components and parties in construction, development and stability.
