A Statement on the recent massacre of Zakho

On Wednesday, at least nine civilians including women and children were martyred, and 23 others were seriously injured as a result of the bombing of a tourist resort in Zakho, in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, where neighboring Turkey has bombed civilians, targeting villages and populated towns continuously without any respect for the sovereignty of neighboring countries, embodying the worst forms of aggression and encroachment on security and stability in the region, especially in Syria and Iraq.

The Syrian Democratic Council condemns and denounces in the strongest terms this heinous massacre, and the council extends sincere sympathy to the people and leadership of Iraq especially to the families of the innocent victims, as it sympathizes with the families of the wounded, and wishes them a quick recovery.

We also emphasize the importance of cooperation among the various political powers in Iraq, mainly between the central government and the Kurdistan Regional Government, to support the mass movement, which from the first moments of the massacre confirmed its rejection and opposition to the Turkish presence on the Iraqi territory.

We also call on the United Nations and the international community to intervene and take the necessary measures to hold Turkey accountable for its ongoing attacks on neighboring countries and its lack of respect and commitment to international law that protects the sovereignty of Iraq. We also call them to put an end to this barbaric behavior conducting by Turkey especially the recent massacre of Zakho.
