A new tragedy for the Syrians which is the loss of 16 people because of the collapse of a building in Aleppo

On Sunday, 16 people lost their lives, and two others were injured because of the collapse of an inhabited five-storey building in Al-Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood in the city of Aleppo, northern Syria.

The incident caused a state of grief that prevailed among the residents of the region, and activists shared pictures of the searches on social media under the name “The Tragedy of Al-Sheikh Maqsoud”.

Seven families (35 individuals) lived in the building, 16 of them lost their lives, including six children and the same number of women, in addition to 4 men from the neighborhood.

Today, thousands of residents of Al-Sheikh Maqsoud and Al-Ashrafiyeh neighborhoods in the city of Aleppo mourned the victims of the collapsed building, after saving all those trapped under the rubble.

Walid Habash, one of the notables of Al-Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood, spoke about the incident and the concerted efforts of the residents of the neighborhood and the rescue teams to recover the victims and remove the rubble. “A lot of the buildings of the neighborhood have been damaged during the battles in 2014, where the neighborhood was targeted by the factions affiliated to Opposition through “Hell Cannon” which led to cracks and damage to many buildings” Habash said about the reason for the collapse of the building.

Habash added that the displacement crisis resulted from the conflict that has been going on since 2011, especially after the occupation of the Afrin region by Turkey and the displacement of its original inhabitants, which led to resorting to damaged or semi-destroyed buildings or lacking basic infrastructure and services.

Yesterday, on Monday, the Syrian Democratic Council issued a telegram of condolence and solidarity for the people of the neighborhood and for the general Syrian people, expressing “feelings of solidarity and sympathy to the bereaved families of the martyrs, to the residents of Al-Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood, to the displaced people from occupied Afrin, and to the general Syrian people”.

Added to this tragedy is the siege of the Fourth Division of the Authority in Damascus on the neighborhoods of Al-Sheikh Maqsoud and Al-Ashrafiyeh, which have been run by the Autonomous Administration, since August 2022, in which the entry of fuel, foodstuffs, infant formula, and medicines is prohibited, amid repeated appeals to lift the siege.

Most of those people are residents of the Kurds of Afrin, who were displaced from their city after the Turkish occupation in 2018, and other residents from Syrian cities who left their cities as a result of the ongoing war in the country.
