The Syrian Democratic Council

A Statement for the Public Opinion

The Syrian Democratic Council welcomes the decision of the United Nations General Assembly to establish an independent institution concerned with uncovering the fate of the forcibly disappeared and missing individuals during the 12 years of the Syrian crisis. We hope that this decision will contribute to alleviating the suffering of the Syrians and ending their crisis effectively.

The Resolution that was adopted by an agreement of the majority of 83 votes, with 11 votes against it and 62 abstentions, including 13 Arab countries, reflected positions that were coincide with the Arab initiative aimed at resolving the Syrian crisis.

We congratulate this decision, which is the result of strenuous efforts made by human rights and humanitarian organizations throughout the years of the Syrian crisis to uncover the fate of over one hundred thousand individuals, according to estimates by non-governmental organizations. We consider it a step in the right direction, albeit a belated one.

We highly appreciate the prioritization of the Syrian people’s cause by the international community and the sincere desire to resolve it. Meanwhile, certain countries continue to manage and exacerbate the Syrian crisis. Their actions undermine its security and stability, promote violence, hatred, terrorism, and extremism, as witnessed in the recent Astana meeting.

We, as the Syrian Democratic Council, welcome this decision and express our full readiness to provide all types of support and assistance to all initiatives and efforts that aim to end the Syrian crisis and alleviate the suffering of Syrians. The Autonomous Administration has previously issued an initiative and a decision to prosecute ISIS members, a trial that is capable of revealing the truth, including the fate of the missing persons.

We also call on the international community to take these initiatives seriously, and we emphasize that the fate of the missing and the disappeared persons will not be hidden, rather we will face more missing persons and loss of lives unless the issue of ISIS is addressed comprehensively and a dignified return is secured for forcibly displaced individuals to their original places.

We believe that there is no method to resolve the Syrian crisis except through the participation of all Syrians without exclusion or discrimination against any party or faction, and by implementing and adhering to UN resolutions with utmost seriousness and commitment.
