In conjunction with the events of the International Women’s Day on March 8, the Women’s Association of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) in Aleppo city announced on Sunday a national strategy to make Syrian women ready to assume the leading role in society for the years of 2024-2025, with the aim of empowering them politically.
Under the slogan “Women are the Safety and Guarantee of New Syria,” the Women’s Office of the SDC held a dialogue seminar in Aleppo. The seminar commenced with a speech by Jihan Khedro, Chairwoman of the Women’s Office, where she announced a specialized strategy for women’s political empowerment.
Khedro extended congratulations to Syrian women and all women in the entire world on the occasion of International Women’s Day. She also acknowledged the remarkable role played by Syrian women, who have been at the forefront despite arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, violence, exploitation, and escalating suffering at all levels.
Subsequently, she announced a specific strategy for women’s political empowerment, aiming to make Syrian women key actors in achieving sustainable development and ensuring their constitutional and legal rights.
This strategy represents an important step toward enhancing women’s role in decision-making and active participation in various aspects of life. It is also a crucial initial step toward preparing a national plan in line with the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 regarding Women, Peace, and Security.
Khedro emphasized the importance of working through the national strategy to empower women to assume leading roles in decision-making positions. The strategy aims to protect women from gender-based violence and raise awareness about the crucial role played by them in leading and developing society. This involves reaching out to women across activities of political parties, women’s organizations, youth groups, and civil society through workshops and lectures conducted by specialized trainers.
The participating women in the seminar considered this strategy essential and necessary for building a more just and progressive society. It aims to achieve equality across various domains. This move includes political life, fostering solidarity among women and supporting them in overcoming challenges to achieve common goals.
Layla Khaled, Co-chairwoman of the Aleppo Cultural Forum, regarded the announcement of the national strategy as a positive move benefiting both women and society. She emphasized the need to empower women intellectually to be able to represent their matters and challenges. Also, Khaled highlighted the importance of involving women from different regions of Syria into various issues through feminist dialogues.
Additionally, Suad Hassan, an administrator at the Aleppo Training Office, stated that this practical implementation of the strategy, targeting all women in Syrian regions, would safeguard women’s freedom and rights.
It is worth noting that this strategy represents a significant move in enhancing women’s roles in decision-making, active participation in political, administrative, and economic domains.
